In your sketchbook divide 5 pages into 2 equal horizontal sections.
Label each section with one of the words below (there are 10)

Draw, color, create a line, shape, texture, and color for each of the words below.

For texture or color you may cut out magazine images and paste/tape them to the page or do rubbings with a crayon over found textures.

If you get stuck get online and see what google images has to offer about the word. Find a definition. Do a regular search and see how different sites portray each audience. Some are easier than others.

Keep your work neat and visually organized as if you were going to present your ideas to a client.

50 points: Grade is based on completion, visual presentation, and creativity of solutions. Do your choices for line, shape, texture and color scream the word you are representing? Show someone else and see if they can guess which word you are designing.

Elements/Principles of Design assignment: thursday

The Principles of Design:
balance
rhythm
unity/harmony
emphasis
contrast
movement

Using only the shapes of circles and squares (can be pushed to ovals and rectangles) and any of the elements from last week, illustrate each of the above principles.

Use Photoshop for this assignment and work in a 640px x 480px area at 72dpi.

Save each image as a jpg and name it like this: lastname_principle.jpg
(i.e. moreno_balance.jpg). Email your files to me in a single email at hilary@samaru.org or hilarymoreno@gmail.com

Make sure to bring your homework on a zip drive to class so we can critique them or email them to me at my gmail address (see above) and we can pull them from there for the critique.

Your work should, of course, be well-designed and highly presentable. Would you give these ideas to a client? Do you want an A on this project? If you are laughing then go back and make them better. Don't settle.

Elements and Principles in Dreamweaver: will be assigned later

Assignment:

Time to start using Dreamweaver...

Use the content below to create a home page. Actually, create three home pages, all with the same content BUT each design should focus on one of the principles of design. Use the combined power of the basic elements such as color, texture, line, shape, space, and texture to brilliantly illustrate the 3 principles of your choice.

Work 640 x 480 for this one as well.

headline: the magic city

main text: Birmingham was founded in 1871, just after the U.S. Civil War, as an industrial enterprise. It was named after Birmingham, the major industrial city of England. Through the middle of the 20th century, Birmingham was the primary industrial center of the Southern United States. The astonishing pace of Birmingham's growth through the turn of the century, earned it the nicknames "The Magic City" and "The Pittsburgh of the South". Much like Pittsburgh in the north, Birmingham's major industries centered around iron and steel production.

Over the course of the 20th century, the city's economy diversified. Though the manufacturing industry maintains a strong presence in Birmingham, other industries such as banking, insurance, medicine, publishing, and biotechnology have risen in stature. Birmingham has been recognized as the top city for income growth in the United States with nearly a one-hundred percent increase in per capita income since 1990.
